Capital One Cup 2015: X-Factor Battles to Watch out for in Chelsea vs. Tottenham

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 01 Mar 2015

Premier League leaders Chelsea will face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Sunday as both sides go in search of an early addition to their trophy cabinet in the League Cup final. For Mauricio Pochettino, it would be the first major title of his management career, while Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho is looking to add to an already overflowing chest of accolades. All past accomplishments will count for nought when the London titans clash on Sunday, however, with a selection of the fixture's key battles discussed in more further detail ahead.Eden Hazard vs.Kyle WalkerFor all the stars under Mourinho's considerable ranks, there's perhaps not one player more consistently meaningful to Chelsea's results than Eden Hazard. The winger takes to Wembley this Sunday hoping to add to his growing trophy case, telling Sam Wallace of theIndependent how happy he is to be working alongside Mourinho:Its true we do have a special relationship. What is good about him as a coach is that he lets us play. He lets me play. He is not always on at me and I really appreciate that. If it isnt good he says so, if it is good he says so. He is always direct. But I dont think he has changed me. He has taught me to become more professional and to be better on the pitch. I dont think I have changed my mentality. You cant change that. I am who I am. He has always taught me to get the best out of myself.Kyle Walker will be the man left with the unenviable task of restraining such a relentless member of the Blues' lineup, boasting a new lease of fitness since returning to action before Christmas. The right-back was at his defensive best against West Ham United last Sunday, as Squawka Dave pointed out following his first-half performance:One of the more appealing traits in Walker's play is the value he offers moving forward with the ball, but it's not often the England international will come up against threats as punishing as Hazard's.It won't stop the Spurs full-back offering his impact in attack, but Walker will be weary of any possession he puts at risk moving up the field, lest Hazard be on hand to punish his over-exuberance.John Terry vs.Harry KaneTwo Premier League icons at quite opposite ends of their England careers will clash in a tremendous head-to-head on Sunday, with John Terry hoping to keep Harry Kane at bay.Kane was an inspirational figure en route to the 5-3 defeat of Chelsea back in November, and he's told theSunday Times that victory gives Spurs the confidence to know what they're capable of:Belief will be an important factor in the tie, of course, but Terry is a veteran who has dealt with this pressure any number of times.Ahead of the final, Chelsea's centre-back bastion has spoken of winning this title for the fans:Terry will be as eager to make up for the mistakes of that New Year's Day defeat as Kane will be to re-create them, with all the pressure on the former to improve this time around. The slightest missed step for Terry could see Kane gifted the inches of space he's shown to make count in recent months, showcasing all the predatory form necessary to confounding Mourinho's back line.Ramires vs. Christian EriksenWith Nemanja Matic suspended from the tie, Ramires seems the most likely alternative to replace the Serbian in Sunday if Mourinho wasn't already planning on fielding an extra midfielder. It will be a difficult reintroduction for the Brazilian, too, paired alongside Cesc Fabregas in a bid to keep Christian Eriksen quiet, the man who has quite literally made Spurs tick almost single-handedly at times this term.Eriksen was turned away by Chelsea for being "too weak" as a 14-year-old, according to theDaily Mail's Riath Al-Samarrai, but Chelsea will know by now the mistake may have been theirs:England was not my first choice at that age.I enjoyed myself but it was too big a step at that time. In England you cant enter the training ground without permission whereas in Denmark you are free to go in. Ajax was a lot closer to home and it meant my mum could come over for my first month. It was an easy decision.Kane may be the finisher supreme among Pochettino's ranks, but one may argue what success the forward would have were it not for Eriksen's running his supply route this season. The Spurs puppeteer is the catalyst Tottenham need to have any steady ammunition on Sunday, but Ramires is a tireless figure in his own right, capable of frustrating the Dane with his own energetic countermeasures.Read more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
