Having polished off his prime ministerial duties, the Conservative leader was bound for a hard day's campaigning in five marginal constituencies in Cheshire and Greater Manchester. Trailing in the polls, amid growing doubts about his party's campaign tactics and prospects, the prime minister has plenty to worry about.
