Arsenal Transfer News: Wojciech Szczesny Joins Roma, New Joel Campbell Rumours

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 30 Jul 2015

Arsenal's Wojciech Szczesny has completed a one-year loan move to AS Roma, as confirmed by the official Twitter account of the Giallorossi:The Poland international was the Gunners' regular starter in goal until a series of subpar performances in 2014-15 opened the door for David Ospina. Following the arrival of Petr Cech during the summer transfer window, it was clear at least one of the two would be leaving the club. That player was the 25-year-old Szczesny, who revealed there were a number of clubs interested in his services:Szczesny moved to north London in 2006, and at the time, he was widely regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world. After working his way through the youth setup and spending time on loan with Brentford, he became the club's starter and did enough to earn a new and improved contract in 2013.But the Poland international's progression seemed to stall, and soon enough, inconsistency started creeping into his game. As revealed by OptaJoe, the numbers indicate he couldn't perform up to expectations:By the end of the 2014-15 season, which Arsenal ended in fine form, most analysts agreed the club needed to upgrade the goalkeeper position in order to mount a serious Premier League title challenge. The Gunners did just that by signing former Chelsea great Cech, which Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe highlighted as one of the top moves of the window:There are two ways of looking at Szczesny's loan move. On the one hand, he'll likely see far more playing time in the Italian capital, where he will battle Morgan De Sanctis for the starting position. Roma have a top squad that will appear in the Champions League, and the loan move could do wonders for Szczesny's development and confidence. On the other hand, the temporary move away from the club feels like the beginning of the end for Szczesny. Arseblog's Tim Stillman already said his goodbyes:Cech is 33 years old, and it's safe to assume he could realistically be among the top stoppers in the Premier League for three or four more years. Unless he regresses drastically, he won't be demoted anytime soon.Szczesny has a good chance to beat the 38-year-old De Sanctis for Roma's starting position, which would give him the opportunity to showcase his skills and increase his transfer value ahead of a permanent move next summer. That's likely why Arsenal allowed him to leave the club on loan, and a permanent departure seems all but certain at some point in the near future.Palermo Loan for Joel Campbell'Arsenal's fringe players appear to be quite popular in Italy, as Palermo have reportedly approached Joel Campbell with an offer for a loan move. According to Gazzetta.it (h/t Football Italia), the Costa Rica international has agreed to the move, and Palermo will now enter negotiations with the Gunners:Arsenals Joel Campbell has reportedly agreed to move to Palermo on loan, with the two clubs now negotiating a deal.Gazzetta.it has reported that Rosanero President Maurizio Zamparini is in London today to discuss terms with the Gunners over a loan move for the Costa Rica international. The report also says that the 23-year-old has already agreed to the move and therefore developments are expected to emerge later today.Campbell has some experience with loan dealshe joined the Gunners in 2011 and has spent at least part of every season since then away from the north London club. He was finally given the chance to prove himself after a great 2014 World Cup, but after failing to impress during the first half of the season, he moved to Villarreal in January.A permanent move away from the club seems likely in 2015, and according to Sky Italia (h/t Squawka's Oisin Fahim) the Gunners have yet to agree to the proposed loan deal because the club prefers to negotiate a sale.Cash isn't an issue for Palermo, who sold Paulo Dybala to Juventus at the start of the transfer window and are still looking for someone to replace the youngster. Dybala formed a deadly duo with Franco Vazquez last season, and the Italians are obviously hoping Campbell could do the same.Unlike Szczesny, it's difficult to envision a scenario where Campbell could go to a solid team and increase his transfer value ahead of a move in 2016. Even if he shines for Palermo, it won't have too much of an impact on how much teams would be willing to spend on a player who already showed his potential during the 2014 World Cup.He signed a new contract in January, per the club's official website, so it's not like Arsenal have to worry about losing Campbell on a free transfer. But manager Arsene Wenger has made it abundantly clear he doesn't rate the Costa Rican enough to believe he will ever be a part of his long-term plans, and a quick transfer in 2015 still seems to make most sense.Follow @ReverschPassRead more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
