Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani Rumours

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 03 Sep 2015

Paris Saint-Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has admitted that he was never interested in a move to Arsenal.According to the Mirror's Liam Corless, the Gunners were rumoured to be pursuing Ibrahimovic in a dramatic late deal for the striker on transfer-deadline day, but the 33-year-old said he didn't consider a switch to north London:No, so the interest that existed, I have not committed myself to.It is [agent] Mino [Raiola] who takes care of the pieces. When I give notice that I want something to happen I get involved. But this summer I have been resting up, I enjoyed the holiday....I said from the beginning that I will stay with PSG.I like it, we have a good team, my family feel good and its just positive with Paris and PSG.The club were also linked with the Swede's team-mate, Edinson Cavani. According to John Cross of the Mirror, the Gunners made several calls about the striker, "including one in the last few days," but "Arsenal didnt want to pay 50 million for a player who is 28 and so has no sell-on value."As such, both players remained in the French capital despite the expectation that one of them would be sold in the summer, per Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson:Though neither would have made a particularly long-term signing for ArsenalIbrahimovic in particular at 33the Gunners could have really used their prolific talents. The Swede bagged 30 goals and eight assists in all competitions last season, while the Uruguayan notched 31 and two, respectively.Arsenal have scored just three goals this season, and two have come courtesy of opposition players deflecting the ball into their own net.Either player could have provided an instant boost to their forward line and potentially made a title-winning difference to their campaigns, which would likely have justified their costsparticularly for the younger Cavani. It seems he was a more realistic option given Ibrahimovic's desire to stay in Paris, so Arsenal should have pursued him further following their failure to land Karim Benzema, per Cross.Football journalist Rafael Hernandez believes their inactivity to be a symptom of manager Arsene Wenger's reign at the club:As Arsenal were the only club in Europe's top five leagues who failed to add a single outfield player, JJ Bull and Callum Davis of the Telegraph reported that Gunners supporters have understandably been vocal in their frustrationwith the inactivity.Wenger now faces the unenviable task of placating the supporters without being able to make any more signings until January at the earliest. To make matters even more difficult for the Frenchman, January is often a harder window to do serious business inthe kind Arsenal need to do in order to challenge for the title. It seems inconceivable that the Gunners could go two windows in a row without adding an outfield player, so there should be a new arrival or two at the Emirates this winter. However, it seems likely that Arsenal will once again have to set their sights on simply a top-four finish.Unless otherwise noted, statistics courtesy of Transfermarkt.
