Chelsea vs. Newcastle: Score, Reaction from 2016 Premier League Game

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 14 Feb 2016

Chelsea romped to a 5-1 win over Newcastle United during Saturday's Premier League action, grabbing some much-needed momentum ahead of the UEFA Champions League clash with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.Diego Costa and Pedro gave the hosts a quick two-goal lead, taking advantage of some dreadful defending, and Willian added a third goal after just 17 minutes. Chelsea continued to look like the better team, and Pedro added a second goal to his tally in the second half.Bertrand Traore scored his first Premier League goal late, while Andros Townsend pulled one back for the Magpies. The win carries the Blues up to 12th place in the standings, while Newcastle still sit in the relegation zone.As the club's official Twitter account shared, both Eden Hazard and Pedro were handed the start for Chelsea:The Blues took a flying start and nearly opened the score with their very first chance, as a loose ball fell to Nemanja Matic. The Serb powered afirstshot on goal, aiming his effort just wide of the post.Minutes later, Chelsea took the lead, and once again, it was the in-form Costa who took care of business. Willian did the hard work, opening up the Newcastle defence with a clever spin before teeing up Costa, who used his strength to get to the ball and fired home from close range.Per bet365, the Spaniard is having a sensational stretch of matches:The Magpies tried to answer Chelsea's early barrage and were able to hold possession a little more, but in the blink of an eye, the Blues doubled their advantage. The visitors dealt with a quick counter-attack but Rolando Aarons made the mistake of trying to pass his way out of the situation, allowing Pedro to nick the ball and go through on goal by himself. The former Barcelona man didn't miss the golden opportunity, courtesy of Newcastle's horrendous defending. KICK TV's Jimmy Conrad didn't mince his words:Down by two goals, Newcastle again tried to play some positive football, and the visitors did well to put their foot next to Chelsea's in the midfield battle. But their defence remained as shaky as ever, and every single time the Blues attacked with purpose, panic seemed to set in.After just 17 minutes, the score was 3-0, with Cesc Fabregas and Costa combining well to eventually set up Willian, who blasted a shot into the roof of the goal.Paddy Power tried to help the visiting fans as best he could:Costa came close to adding a fourth goal immediately after, as another defensive mistake gave him the chance to rush through on goal. Goalkeeper Robert Elliot rushed off his line in the nick of time, saving his team further embarrassment. The Blues continued to push forward, and both Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry had good chances of adding to the lead. While Chelsea were playing arguably their best match of the season, Newcastle didn't seem at all interested to make life difficult on the hosts. The pace of the match finally started to drop toward the end of the first half, as the Blues were happy to hold onto the lead and the visitors had no intention of chasing a goal of their own. Georginio Wijnaldum gave Thibaut Courtois something to do, firing a volley straight into his arms.Terry picked up a knock and left the pitch just before half-time, the only setback in what was a fantastic first half for the Blues. Per bet365, Terry's injury could be a major issue going forward:Chelsea looked to control the pace of the match in the second half and didn't push for more goals, opting to save their strengths for the big matches on the horizon. The first chance of the second half went to the Blues, as Matic cleverly pulled a ball back after a set piece, but none of the waiting players could poke it home before Jonjo Shelvey cleared.Costa tried his luck with an overhead kick, firing the ball straight at Elliot, before Aleksandar Mitrovic powered a shot just wide of the post.A goal seemed inevitable, and it was Pedro who doubled his tally, using his speed to get free after a smart pass from Fabregas and calmly converting the chance. ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney thought the Spaniard showed flashes of his Barcelona form:The fourth goal truly sucked all of the intensity out of the match, although the home fans didn't seem to care much given the healthy lead the Blues were now defending.Substitute Traore managed to add another goal to Chelsea's impressive tally, however, after some lovely work from Hazard and Cesar Azpilicueta. A late consolation goal for Townsend did little to improve the mood of the visiting fans, but it was a nice confidence-booster for the former Tottenham Hotspur star.Chelsea will take plenty of momentum from the win, but Terry's injury is a serious setback, making the UEFA Champions League clash with an in-form Paris Saint-Germain look even more daunting. Newcastle will enjoy some time away from the pitch, as their Premier League match against Manchester City has been postponed. Post-Match ReactionPer the club's official Twitter account, interim manager Guus Hiddink made it clear he wasn't too happy with the fact Chelsea were forced to play on Saturday, just days before their Champions League clash against PSG: "Hiddink says after such an intense game, the PSG game comes too soon but we go there with confidence high."Follow @ReverschPassRead more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
