Carson Wentz to Eagles: Twitter Reacts as QB Is Selected in 2016 NFL Draft

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 29 Apr 2016

When the Philadelphia Eagles traded up to the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NFL draft, it was widely expected that Carson Wentz was their target. The Eagles confirmed those suspicions Thursday, selecting the North Dakota State Bison product to be their next franchise quarterback:Philly's decision to move up to No. 2 came with some controversy. Sam Bradford, who signed a two-year extension in March, has already requested a trade."Basically, our contention is that the team could have used the draft picks on offensive and defensive players for this season, to win this season," agent Tom Condon said, per Sal Paolantonio of ESPN.com. "If the plan was to build for the future, where does that leave Sam this year'"Doug Farrar ofSports Illustrated offered insight:ESPN's Trey Wingo made an apt comparison:Wentz, 23, is the highest-drafted FCS quarterback in history. Steve McNair, who went No. 3 overall out of Alcorn State in 1995, was the previous record holder. The 6'5", 237-pound Wentz moved up draft boards in large part thanks to his prototypical build. He boasts a huge arm and above-average athleticism for his size and won two titles as North Dakota State's starter. If Bradford listens to Art Stapleton of theRecord, Wentz may need his athleticism to watch his back:The 700 Level shared this image:As ESPN.com's Darren Rovell noted, the Eagles will hope Wentz is as good at quarterbacking as he was at growing:Thiswell, this was just a solid burn:Now for the best of the rest:The question now is when Wentz will start. Bradford hasn't gone anywhere yet, and the Eagles would take a massive cap hit by trading him now. While it's clear he's unhappy with what has transpired throughout the offseason, Bradford's probably still the favorite to start in Week 1. If he gets through the weekend without a trade, that would be even more likely. With Chase Daniel also in the fold, the Eagles have a weird logjam at quarterback.Eagles coach Doug Pederson said the team could wait on Wentz to start, per Turron Davenport ofUSA Today:If Wentz doesn't pan out, they'll luckily have options. But given all they gave up to grab him, this is a major risk.Follow Tyler Conway (@jtylerconway) on Twitter.
