Carson Wentz to Eagles: Takeaways from QB's Introductory Press Conference

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 30 Apr 2016

The Philadelphia Eagles sacrificed a lot of future assets to move up in the 2016 NFL draft to take North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz with the No. 2 overall pick.Speculated to be the choice since the team made the deal to give up third- and fourth-round picks this year, a 2017 first-round choice and a 2018 second-rounder, Philadelphia formally introduced Wentz Friday as its hopeful long-term answer at QB.Wentz has obvious potential, hence the significant investment the Eagles made in him, but he has a lot to prove to justify being such a high draft pick. The 23-year-old addressed the media and recognized he must live up to the hype for the organization and for the team's fanbase."Everyone's been telling me how passionate everyone is. ... They're passionate here, hate losing, heck I fit right in," said Wentz, per CBS3's Jan Carabeo. Wentz added, per NJ.com's Eliot Shorr-Parks, "The expectations are high here. I know that."Considering he hails from a college football program that's won the past five national championships at its level of competition, Wentz expressed an understanding of the work ethic it takes to achieve optimal gridiron success."I want to work my tail off to be the best. ... I just hate losing," Wentz said, per the Eagles' official Twitter feed. The signal-caller is, in fact, already eager to hit the practice field to work at his craft."I'm fired up. I'm ready to go out to practice but they won't let me," Wentz said, per CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank.Per NJ.com's Matt Lombardo, Wentz called being drafted "surreal" and a dream come trueand also mentioned the type of competitor he wanted to emulate:Hearing someone aspire to be a legend in the mold of Brett Favre is commendably candid considering the high standard it implies. More interesting regarding the Favre allusion is the fact that Wentz's new head coach, Doug Pederson, was a backup to Favre for the Green Bay Packers from 1996-98 and in the early 2000s.Comcast SportsNet's John Middlekauff approved of the job Wentz did fielding questions at his presser:Since Wentz hails from a smaller school and has a sample size of only 612 passing attempts during four years at North Dakota State,it's easy to be skeptical about him as a player. On the other hand, his upside is undeniable based on the tools he has.In addition to already understanding a pro-style offense based on the system he ran with the Bison, Wentz looks the part of an NFL franchise QB.At the NFL Scouting Combine, Philly's new signal-caller measured at 6'5" and weighed 237 pounds. His 40-yard dash was an impressive 4.77 seconds, and he also showed lateral quickness and good change of direction with his 6.86-second three-cone drill.Wentz has the arm talent to make any throw the NFL requires, not to mention the athletic ability to extend passing plays and even manufacture yards with his legs as a scrambler or on designed runs. How he handles the mental side of being a pro and whether he has the intangibles required to do sohe appears to, to be fairwill go a long way in determining the outcome of Wentz's tenure in Philadelphia. That's not only digesting the playbook, it's also in reference to handling the spotlight, the media attention and a potentially sticky situation with incumbent starting QB Sam Bradford. The veteran reportedly requested a trade after the Eagles traded for the rights to acquire Wentz.Wentz even said Friday, per the Philadelphia Enquirer's Jeff McLane, "As a competitor you want to be out there."To his credit, though, Wentz passed his first test on Friday with flying colors overall. Now the trick will be finding a way onto the field, being productive therein but also possibly handling a full 2016 season on the bench, tempering his evident competitive fire with class and calmness.
