$3.5bn Grant: CSO Urges World Bank To Monitor Governors Project Implementation

A human rights and good governance advocacy initiative, Make A Difference [MAD], has asked the World Bank to demand from each of the 36 state governors the development projects they wish to execute, verify their relevance to their people, before deciding on whether or not to release the said $3.25 billion funds.Last week, the governors had met with officials of the World Bank led by its Director, Rachid Benmessaoud in Abuja to negotiate for the release of $3.25 Billion fund, being balance of $4.25 Billion having released $1 Billion to some governors already.MAD said should the World Bank be convinced to release the said funds to the governors, it has an obligation to publish the projects for which the money was released in line with the principles of transparency, accountability and probity.In a statement signed by the Executive Director of MAD, Lemmy Ughegbe, the Initiative said whereas MAD appreciates the goodwill of World Bank to support development in the states through the dedicated funds, it however requests that the global institution is thorough, meticulous and detailed in the process leading to approving and releasing the funds.MAD notes that since the return of Nigeria to democracy in 1999, states Governors have had a history of collecting loans and grants and diverting same to their personal purses rather than deploying them to the purpose for which they were accessed ab initio.The post $3.5bn Grant: CSO Urges World Bank To Monitor Governors Project Implementation appeared first on Nigerian News from Leadership News.
