3 Manchester United Youngsters Who Must See Playing Time in 2016/17 Season

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 29 May 2016

Other than his FA Cup win, the defining positive of Louis van Gaal's reign as Manchester United manager was his willingness to give playing time to promising youngsters who had come through the club's academy system. The approach to this will no doubt change with the advent of the Jose Mourinho era, but here are three youngsters who should get playing time regardless of their new manager's reputation.Marcus Rashford's need for playing time is taken as read, so obvious is his talent. Also excluded here are RoShaun Williams and James Weir, players who excelled at youth level last season. Mourinho will have his hands full giving game time to youngsters who impressed in the first team, so the younger lads might have to wait another season for regular involvement outside of the League Cup.Let's take a look at three players Mourinho needs to consider when making his plans for the task ahead.Cameron Borthwick-JacksonCameron Borthwick-Jackson symbolises Van Gaal's willingness to throw perhaps unlikely youngsters in the first team to cover for injury but also his somewhat surprising hesitance to keep them in the lineup when senior players returned. After all, when Marcos Rojo was fit again, Borthwick-Jackson was quickly replaced. It seemed an odd decision at the time for all the reasons whyMourinho should ensure there is a place in his squad for the 19-year-old.Luke Shaw will likely be the defacto first-choice left-back, as he should be, but Borthwick-Jackson's coolness under pressure and his superb delivery from crosses make him an ideal back-up option. From his debut in November onward, Borthwick-Jackson was a steady presence in the side, providing an outlet on the overlap of the type that will be crucial under Mourinho. Having a full-back who is a genuine attacking threat allows wide forwards to cut inside, something that has long been part of how Mourinho builds his attack. There are, of course, mistakes in the youngster, as there are in any defender of his experience level, but he hardly let Van Gaal down when he was called upon, and Mourinho should avail himself of the same option. If he develops his positional awareness and defensive speed of thought, Borthwick-Jackson could be a huge asset.Timothy Fosu-MensahCBJ is joined by TFM in the young-players-brought-through-and-inexplicably-dropped-by-Van Gaal club. Timothy Fosu-Mensah's progress through the youth ranks was rapid. He was eligible for the under-18s, had been promoted to the under-21s and was then called up to the senior side in February. The 18-year-old looked like he absolutely belonged in the Premier League. His defensive numbers have been superbsee here for more on thatand his attacking contribution included the assist for Anthony Martial winner in United's 1-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford in April. While he was a little shaky against the same opposition in the FA Cup semi-final, giving away a couple of simple passes early in the game and then, more damagingly, conceding a penalty, he nonetheless looks ready to at least be a useful rotation option.Given his extraordinary positional flexibilityat home in either full-back spot or in defensive midfieldhe should be a useful tool in Mourinho's kit.Andreas PereiraAndreas Pereira was consistently overlooked by Van Gaalhardly a surprising fate for an improvisational forward. It was one of the Dutchman's most frustrating decisions, especially in the face of his side's huge deficit in creativity around the box for long periods last season. When Pereira did play, he looked ready. Ipswich Townmay not be a particularly testing opponent, but he was clearly not fazed by the glare of the Old Trafford floodlights against them in the Capital One Cup in September. He performed well when called upon in bigger games too, but Van Gaal clearly did not take to him.Mourinho should. There will no doubt be player recruitment this summer, and creative attackers will presumably be a part of that, but United's new manager should at least take a good look at the potential gem sitting under his nose.Of the three listed here, the 20-year-old is perhaps the most unlikely to get serious playing time this season, falling into the category Kevin De Bruyne did at Chelsea. He was obviously talented but perhaps had too many rough edges for Mourinhoor was unwilling to buy into the project in the way the Portuguese manager requires of his players.De Bruyne has, of course, returned to the Premier League with a bang, making Chelsea's decision to let him go look questionable. Hopefully, for the sake ofPereiraand the fans who would like to see his talent on show at Old Trafford, Mourinho will take a different approach here.
