100th Open de France 2016: Thursday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 30 Jun 2016

Lucas Bjerregaard opened the 100th running of the Open de France tournament with a round of five-under on Thursday, taking a one-shot lead over several players into the second day of competition.Bernd Wiesberger, Thomas Pieters, Adrian Otaeguiand Thongchai Jaidee all finished the day four-under, while Rory McIlroy struggled, shooting par. Spain's Otaegui was the only man to card a bogey-free round. Here's a look at the leaderboard:To access the full leaderboard, visit the European Tour's official website.RecapBjerregaard couldn't have asked for a much better start to his day, as he bagged the first ace of his European Tour career on the second hole, a par-three.As shared by the European Tour's official Twitter account, the Dane explained what it felt like:He came back down to earth with a bogey on the next hole but would score two more birdies on the front nine before shooting one-under on the back nine for a final score of five-under and the early lead.Bjerregaard missed on one of his scrambles and one of his sand saves, but his short game was on point. The 24-year-old finds himself in a great position to win his maiden European Tour event, although there's a long way to go still, and competition at Le Golf National will be fierce. Some of the world's best players and former winners of the event have traveled to Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Paris, although not all of them found success on Thursday. McIlroy finds himself five shots behind Bjerregaard after shooting 71 in his opening round. The Northern Irishman struggled from the tee and only converted three of his seven scrambles, but his short game kept him in the running for the tournament win.Per the European Tour's official website, he admitted he's mainly focused on his swing and not the results on the course after he completed his round:I've got about four or five swing thoughts out there at the minute, so that's why I'm sort of happy with 71 with how much I'm focusing on my golf swing and my technique. My left-hand grip is too strong, takeaway was going on the inside, wasn't holding my right elbow properly at the top of my swing, wasn't getting my right knee out of the way on the down-swing. I've been working on a few things.Michael and I have done a good bit of work over the last few days, trying to bed some stuff in. It will take a while but I was encouraged with some of the shots I hit out there today. Here's a look at that swing of his:Wiesberger played a solid round of four-under to stay within a single shot of Bjerregaard, bogeying the eighth hole but making up for his mistake with three birdies on the front nine and two more on the back nine. The Austrian didn't face a single sand save and was perfect with his scrambles, but he needed 29 putts to get through the round, a number he'll have to cut back on to stay in the running for the title. The same goes for Eddie Pepperell, who needed 31 putts just to make par on the day. The Englishmen shot par throughout the par nine before dropping two holes and making two birdies on the back nine. Pepperell played very well off the tee, but his short game will have to improve moving forward. Follow @ReverschPass
