100th Open de France 2016: Friday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 01 Jul 2016

Rory McIlroy bounced back from his poor opening round to grab a share of the lead at the 2016 Open de France on Friday, carding a round of five-under.He's tied at the top of the leaderboard with Thongchai Jaidee, Brandon Stone, Jeunghun Wang and Mikko Ilonen, while defending champion Bernd Wiesberger sits one shot further back. Here's a look at the leaderboard after the second day of competition:To access the full leaderboard, visit the European Tour's official website.RecapMcIlroy struggled during the opening round of this year's Open de France, finishing par, but he found his swing on Friday and came out firing on the front nine, with four birdies and not a single dropped shot. His approaches in particular were on point, and he soon joined the leaders at five-under.Here's a look at one of his top highlights of the day, via the European Tour's official Twitter account:He continued his fine form on the back nine, but as he reached the 16th hole, rain started to fall. McIlroy just missed the chance at another birdie, hitting the pin too hard, but he kept his composure and didn't let the rain bother him until the 18th.McIlroy finally hit his first bogey on the final hole, however, going into the drink and settling for a round of five-under and a share of the lead. The tricky course at Le Golf National, Paris, had several top players guessing once again on Friday. Chris Wood, who double-bogeyed the third hole on Thursday on his way to a score of one-under, recorded three more bogeys and just the single birdie during his second round and sits well outside the top 10.He still believes in his chances to climb the leaderboard, however:Wiesberger was unable to build on his fine opening round, as he endured a frustrating day on Friday to finish par. Two bogeys on the front nine were followed by an excellent stretch on the back nine, where he made five birdies to grab the lead going to the final hole. A dreadful approach and some poor putting led to a triple-bogey, however, dropping him out of the lead.Per the European Tour's official Twitter account, he too talked about the difficult nature of the course after his round:Jaidee fared a little better, as birdies on the ninth and 18th salvaged his round, and he finished one-under on the day. He needed just 26 putts to get around the course, but he also converted just four of his eight scrambles.Ilonen was one of the top risers of the day, finishing three-under thanks to a solid front nine, where he hit three birdies and one bogey. The Fin found the fairway on just three of 14 occasions, but he saved his round with some solid approaches.Spain's Adrian Otaegui was one of the standout performers from the first round, but a disastrous showing on Friday all but ended his bid to take the title. He started with two birdies on the first three holes, but three bogeys pushed his score up, and a dreadful run at the end of the back nine, which started with a double-bogey on the 15th, saw him fall out of the top 30.
