Liverpool Transfer News: Latest on Max Meyer, Ben Chilwell Rumours

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 23 Jul 2016

Liverpool are once again being linked with a Bundesliga star, as manager Jurgen Klopp has reportedlymade contact with Schalke 04 about midfielder Max Meyer. Meanwhile,Leicester City youngster Ben Chilwell is said to be close to signing a new deal with the Foxes amid interest from the Reds.According to German outlet Sport Bild (h/t Daily Star's Luke Gardener), Klopp has been following Meyer for a long time and became a fan while he was still in charge of Borussia Dortmund. The newspaper says Liverpool have now contacted Schalke, as Klopp wants to add the 20-year-old as a depth option and someone he can develop.Meyer has long been regarded as one of Germany's top young talents and was an easy addition to Bleacher Report's list of the top 100 youth prospects in Europe last year, compiled by Sam Tighe.Tighe ranked him 71st, well behind some on the continent's top youngsters, and had this to say: Meyer's star is fading a little; he just hasn't made the impact he was expected to after bursting on to the scene 12 months ago. He's technically very talented and picks a lovely pass, but he drifts from games and lacks that defining impact you want to see. That explanation goes some way to explain how shocked most pundits and fans of the Bundesliga were when they read about Liverpool's perceived interest. WhoScored.com's Dinesh Hardayal was one of them:Meyer enjoyed a solid campaign in 2015-16, scoring five goals in the Bundesliga and adding eight assists, per Gardener, but Leroy Sane quickly usurped him as Schalke's top young talent. Meyer's development hasn't been nearly as rapid as some thought it would be two years ago. And while he's still young, it's logical to doubt whether he'll actually live up to his enormous potential.Schalke have a superb reputation when it comes to grooming young talent, which is likely why Breel Embolo opted to join the team from Basel this summer. But the side can only field a certain amount of youngsters without jeopardising results. And pretty soon, the supremely talented Donis Avdijaj will start pushing for a starting spot as well.Meyer is capable of spectacular things with the ball, as you can see in the video below:But he's primarily an attacking midfielder who occupies many of the same spaces Philippe Coutinho does, and if there's one area where the Reds don't need help, it's just behind the attack. Roberto Firmino can also fill in at the position, as can new signing Georginio Wijnaldum, who officially joined the Reds on Friday, per Sky Sports News HQ.Adding Meyer as well would make little sense, and the youngster would likely prefer to stay in Gelsenkirchen or move to a club where he'll play regular minutes and continue his development.Another youngster unlikely to move to Anfield is the 19-year-old Chilwell, who is close to committing his future to Leicester, per ESPN FC's Pete O'Rourke. According to the report, the left-back was still a target for Klopp, even after a first transfer offer was rejected earlier this summer.Chilwell didn't play much last year, as Christian Fuchs was the regular starter at the King Power Stadium. But he's regarded as one of the best prospects in England and expected to play a major role for the Foxes in the near future. Here's a look at some of Chilwell's top highlights from Leicester's FA Cup ties and a handful of youth matches, as well as his loan with Huddersfield:Losing out on Chilwell won't have an impact on the immediate future of the Reds, and Klopp is known as a fantastic talent evaluator who will likely find other prospects with supreme potential in a hurry. The Liverpool boss could have worked wonders with Chilwell, but his snub won't make or break the summer transfer window.
