Danny Ainge Says Isaiah Thomas' Hip Injury Could Still Require Surgery

Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge told reporters Friday that while point guard Isaiah Thomas is doing "much better," his hip injury could still require surgery at some point during the offseason.According to ESPN.com's Chris Forsberg, Ainge confirmed that even if Thomas does go under the knife, he should be recovered in time for training camp."That's what we're all hoping, that's what we all think," he said, per Forsberg.Thomas gutted his way through the first two games of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the Celticsshut him downafter he aggravated theright femoral-acetabular impingement with labral tear he initially suffered in March.Other than Thomas' status for training camp, the other big question facing the floor general this summer is whether or not he'll receive a contract extension.Speaking to reporters on May 27, Thomas indicated he would be amendable to hammering out terms of an extension later in order to bring high-priority free agents into the fold now."We need the best possible player that's gonna help us win, and I'm with that," Thomas said, perForsberg. "Anything Danny and this organization need me to do to help bring even more talent to this city, I'm all for that. I want to win a championship and being so close to getting to the Finals, that makes you want it that much more."With one week to go until the start of free agency, the Celtics have beenlinkedto Gordon Hayward,Blake Griffinand Paul George, among others.
