Arsene Wenger Says PSG Want Neymar Because They 'Cannot Get' Alexis Sanchez

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 24 Jul 2017

Paris Saint-Germain's pursuit of Barcelona star Neymar is because they "cannot get" Alexis Sanchez, according to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.Per John Cross of the Mirror, Wenger also denied reports Sanchez had travelled to the French capital to hold talks over a move:"No, I don't think he was in Paris. No. Paris Saint-Germain cannot get Sanchez so they go for Neymar."I read L'Equipe in the last three to four days and it has moved from Sanchez to Neymar. You know they are speaking about Neymar, a few days [after] they were speaking about Sanchez. They need a subject to write about."My mind has been made up for a while now. I think I've made it clear a few times that he is not for sale and this is my stance."Sanchez is in the final year of his deal at Arsenal and reportedly wants 400,000 per week to stay at the club, while PSG are trying to sign Neymar in a sensational 196 million move.In terms of age and overall ability, Neymar has the edge on both counts, so it's difficult to imagine he would be the second choice in this scenario, particularly given the astronomical costs involved in his capture compared with Sanchez. The Chilean won't come cheap if Arsenal were to relent and part with him, though. Aside from his reported wage demands, Cross reported the Gunners would "find it difficult to refuse" a bid of 70 million. He may have less than a year remaining at Arsenal, but he'll nevertheless command a significant fee given his status at the club as arguably their most important player, not to mention the season he just had, per Squawka Football:Per Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol, PSG are determined to buy a player who can help fire them to UEFA Champions League glory:Unless Sanchez signs a new deal at Arsenal his saga is set to rumble on throughout the summer, while Neymar might well be the same barring a public declaration of his intent to stay. The Gunners' desire to keep the former is admirable, but PSG might appear to be an attractive option if Sanchez won't stay, given a move there would not strengthen a direct rival. As for Neymar, a move may not be impossible given Les Parisiens' wealth, but such is the scope of the deal and the wages that would be involved, it could be a lengthy and difficult deal to pull off.
