Barcelona terror attack: Van driver still on the run, death toll 13, police kill 5 terror suspects in second Spanish city

Spanish police are still searching for the van driver behind a terror attack in Barcelona.The attacker hit crowds on Las Ramblas, killing 13 and injuring around 100.Police killed five suspects in a second attack on Cambrils, 60 miles away.Police made a third arrest in connection with the attacks on Friday morning. Police in Spain are still hunting for the attacker who drove a van down a crowded tourist street in Barcelona on Thursday, killing at least 13 people.Three people have been arrested in connection with the Las Ramblas attack, but the suspected driver of the van is still on the run, more than 12 hours after the attack took place.Separately, police in the nearby Spanish city of Cambrils shot dead five suspected terrorists who had run into another crowd in a car, injuring seven people.The second attack, around 60 miles south west of Barcelona, took place several hours after the Las Ramblas ramming. Police have said thatthe two attacks are linked.Witnesses to the initial attack in Barcelona described the van zig-zagging down Las Ramblas, a long, tree-lined boulevard and one of Barcelona's central tourist destinations, around 5 p.m. local time (CET). It travelled several hundred metres before coming to a halt over a mosaic.Two men were arrested on Thursday evening, one in Ripoll and another in Alcanar, both towns in the Catalonia region of Spain, of which Barcelona is the capital. The regionalMossos d'Esquadra police force announcedon Friday morning that they had arrested a third person, also in Ripoll:We have arrested a third person in Ripoll related to the attacks #Cambrils #Barcelona' Mossos (@mossos) August 18, 2017As well as the 13 confirmed dead, around 100 people have been injured. A statement from the Catalan regional government, cited by the Reuters news agency, said that victims came from at least 24 different countries.Officials have warned that the death toll may rise. Even at its present level, the attack on Barcelona is the deadliest attack in Spain since a series of train bombings in the capital Madrid killed 192 people in 2004.This story is developing.Join the conversation about this story
