Jameis Winston to Receive MRI on Shoulder Injury Suffered vs. Cardinals

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 16 Oct 2017

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder Sunday during the second quarter of the team's Week 6 game against theArizona Cardinalsand did not return. He will get an MRI on his right shoulder Monday, according to Roy Cummings of TBO.com. X-rays were negative, per Kevin O'Donnell of Fox 13, who added it's unclear whether Winston will be able to play next week. When asked about the injury, Winston said, "I'll be back. Soon," according to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, who added the quarterback wanted to return to Sunday's game.Winston was only 5-of-10 for 61 yards before coming out as his team trailed 24-0 to the Arizona Cardinals. The Bucs ended up losing 38-33, asRyan Fitzpatrickthrew for 290 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in the losing effort.Expectations have been high for the Buccaneers this season after they went 9-7 in 2016. They added DeSean Jackson in free agency to give Winston a speed threat on the outside to pair with Mike Evans on the opposite side of the field.Winston's injury could dampen those hopes. He's thrown for over 4,000 yards in each of his first two seasons and a combined 50 touchdowns. The Buccaneers positioned themselves well with depth at quarterback in the event Winston went down. Fitzpatrick has had an up-and-down career, but he did succeed two years ago with the New York Jets when he had playmakers like Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker to throw to.If Winston's injury does prove to be serious, Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter may have to tweak his system to fit what Fitzpatrick does well. Losing Winston for an extended period won't crush Tampa Bay's playoff aspirations, but it'd be far from ideal.
