Published by Tribune on Thu, 24 Jul 2014

A 20-year-old secondary school leaver, Oluwatobi Badmus, has died in Akure, following an alleged torture meted on him by men of the Ondo State Police Command. The boy was said to have been tortured at the 'B' Division of the Nigeria Police, over alleged stealing of handset belonging to a prophet, along the street where the deceased resided. The father of the deceased, Chief Raheem Badmus has however, petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on the alleged killing of his son, demanding that justice should be done on the matter.According to the petition signed by the counsel to the deceased father, Damilare Asani, he said his only son died as a result of the injury sustained when in the police custody on the allegation of stealing handset. The father of the deceased, a popular hotelier in Akure, Ondo State capital, said the boy was hale and hearty when he came to break his Ramadan fast with him on Monday, claiming that he was killed by the police. The petition stated that the deceased was living with his uncle, one Sola Oke, at Okuta Elerinla Estate. The petition reads, 'On the 21st day of July, 2014, the deceased called his younger sister, Seun Badmus, informing her of his arrest at 'B' Division, Akure, on the allegation of stealing handset.'That sequel to the arrest, the complainant instructed Corporal Adesola Awodeyi, who happened to be his friend to torture the deceased in order to admit the allegation of stealing made against the deceased.'Badmus, however, claimed that the deceased was taken away for about 35 minutes following which he was allegedly tortured. The petition further said, 'That when the deceased was eventually brought back by Corporal Awodeyi, his face was swollen and his bulged eyes became so reddish to the extent that he could not compose himself as he began to complain of headache and stomach ache.'That immediately the deceased was dropped, he started vomiting and foaming through his mouth and nose, and the deceased was taken to the hospital where it was confirmed that he is already dead.'Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Wole Ogodo, said the Area Commander in charge of Akure, has commenced investigation on it, saying findings would be made public when concluded. He said conclusion should not be drawn that the deceased was killed by police as autopsy to be conducted would reveal the real cause of Badmus death.
