Commonwealth Games: Opara wins first medal for Nigeria

NIGERIA on Thursday appeared on the medals' table at the ongoing 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland, through the heroics of Nkechi Opara who finished third in the women's weightlifting 48kg.Opara was unable to go further after lifting 70kg in snatch, 92kg in clean and 162kg in total lift as subsequent attempts to match her opponents were unsuccessful, to settle for the bronze medal.India's Sanjita Khumukchan, 20, won gold medal the event when she lifted 77kg in snatch, 96kg in clean and jerk and 173kg in total lift ahead of her team-mate, Mirabai Chanu Saikhom, 19, who lifted 75kgkg in snatch, 95kg in clean and jerk and 170kg in total lift.Earlier in the day, another Nigerian lifter Tanimowo Rasaq made the country proud as he advanced in the men's 56kg after finishing ahead of six other competitors vying for honours in group B.Rasaq lifted 95kg in the snatch event and 130kg in the clean and jerk, while he finished with a total lift of 225kg.Guinares Lou of New Zealand followed as he finished with 206kg after recording 90kg in snatch and 116kg in clean and jerk.Qala Fred placed third with 85kg in snatch and 118 in clean and jerk and 203kg as total lift while Cameroonian Ndicka Matam Paul followed with 82kg in snatch, 110kg in clean and jerk and 192kg as total lift.
