Arsenal Transfer News: William Carvalho Perfect for Gunners' Midfield Need

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 01 Sep 2014

Arsenal are in a position to make some roster-shifting moves in the very near future, and paying the transfer fee to bring in midfielder William Carvalho would represent a great move for the Gunners. The Gunners lack depth in the defensive midfield. Should they complete a transfer of Carvalho, the 22-year-old will likely provide quality depth as a rotational piece from the start. Carvalho certainly has the potential to play a larger role in the future, but he'll likely need some time in the Premier League before being trusted with more responsibilities. The midfielder was stellar in 2013-14, however, so it shouldn't take too long for him to acclimate to the Premier League. He's widely regarded as one of the top holding midfielders in Europe, so the talented youngster would make an immediate impact.Negotiations between Sporting and Arsenal haven't been easy. Wayne Veysey of Goal.com broke down the issues:The complex nature of the negotiations mean they are likely to go down to the wire but Arsenal are increasingly hopeful of capturing the 22-year-old before Monday night's transfer deadline.Sporting are ready to cash in on Carvalho although, according to reports in Portugal, 40 per cent of his rights are owned by investment firm Banco Espirito Santo. The player is also represented by super agent Jorge Mendes, which has added a layer of difficulty to discussions taking place between the parties.Carvalho, a Portugal international, is a must-get for Arsene Wenger. The lack of depth makes it apparent that more bodies are needed, and Carvalho can easily turn into one of the better young players in the league once he acclimates to the style of play. With the transfer deadline on the horizon, a ton needs to happen for this to occur. Negotiations have been difficult, but with Sporting's desire to get the most for him, it will eventually come time to unload him and reap the benefits. If Sporting will accept something in the25 million range, then Arsenal will certainly be on board with the move. Anything north of30 million will likely force Wenger to look elsewhere, possibly to Brazilian Luiz Gustavo.Follow Kenny DeJohn on Twitter: @KennyDeJohn_BRRead more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
