2015 elections: We have no candidate, but... 'US 'We want free, fair, credible elections 'APC

Published by Tribune on Mon, 01 Sep 2014

AHEAD the 2015 elections, the United State of America (USA), at the weekend, disclosed that the country will not support any political party in Nigeria, but 'a credible process in which the Nigerian people can freely express their wishes.'The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James F. Entwistle, who dropped this hint when he visited the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he met the APC national chairman,Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and other party officials. The US envoy, who stated that he was at the APC national secretariat to discuss what could be done to achieve a free and fair election in Nigeria, maintained that 'we are not here to support anybody or any candidate, but to support a credible process in which the Nigerian people can freely express their wishes.'According to him, 'that is why we provide support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and civil societies as we get ready for this election. As I travel round this country, I talk about the importance of non-violent elections, especially before, during and after elections. What I am telling you now, I say to everybody across the spectrum.'We should all agree that there is no place for it and I encourage all candidates and parties to commit themselves now not to participate in violence in any way,' he stated. On abducted Chibok girls, he said: 'We stand with your government in its effort to rescue these girls; we stand with your government in its effort against the Boko Haram. We provide different kinds of assistance and my country stand with your country in its counter-terrorism efforts. That had always been the case and that will always be the case.'Earlier in his address, Chief Odigie-Oyegun commended US government for various assistance it had rendered to Nigeria and equally asked the US envoy to help talk to those that mattered on the need to allow people of Nigeria to have free, fair and credible elections. To this end, he thanked the US envoy 'for the assistance the US have given to this nation, especially the assistance the various institutions from the US have been giving both to the INEC and civil societies in our efforts to deepen democracy; the assistance you are giving to our poor children, especially the Chibok girls and the assistance you are giving generally to help us cope with the insurgency in the North-Eastern part of the country.Speaking further, he said: 'I am sure that as very good friends, you would want to see very stable Nigeria nation and a stable Nigerian nation can only be possible when there is fairness, equity, justice and the right to choose is respected and guaranteed and we hope that you will talk to all of us, particularly the powers that be to help us ensure that elections in Nigeria are truly free, fair and democratic and that a proper level playing field is guaranteed.'The truth is that we are often blamed for being bad losers, not just the APC, but Nigerians. But losers find it difficult to accept because there is no demonstrable level playing field. The kind of thing we are having is that weeks to elections, the might, militarisation and the rest of it and monetary inducement are deployed in such a way that it places the opposition clearly at a disadvantage.
