Arsenal trails Yobo

Published by Tribune on Fri, 19 Sep 2014

FORMER Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, is said to be figuring in the calculation of English Premiership side Arsenal and the Gunners coach Arsene Wenger wants to explore the free agents market to bring the Nigerian to the Emirates.According to the Daily Mail of UK, Arsenal is looking to sign a central defender to provide cover for Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, after the club was left with just three senior defenders for its Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund midweek. The London side lost the match 0-2.Yobo left Turkish clubside Fenerbahce in August by mutual agreement and he is available as a free agent. The transfer window closed on September 1, but clubs can still sign free agents.Arsenal is also said to be looking in the direction of another defender, Diego Lugano, who is also a free agent at present. Both Yobo and Lugano are no strangers to English football having featured for different clubs in the English Premiership in the past.Uruguayan Lugano was released by West Bromwich Albion in May, while Yobo only made a return to the English Premiership in January after Fenerbahce loaned him to Norwich City. Between 2002 and 2012, the former Nigeria international featured for English Premiership side Everton, which signed him from French club Olympique Marseille. The Daily Mail report added that both Yobo and Lugano have been discussed at London Colney headquarters of Arsenal.
