... Kano, Kogi okay September 22 resumption date, Kwara NUT kicks

Published by Tribune on Sat, 20 Sep 2014

The Kano State government has directed all schools in the state to re-open on Monday. Also, members of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Kogi State chapter, have indicated their readiness to resume normal academic activities in all the secondary schools in the state on Monday. The Kano State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Tajudeen Gambo, who made the announcement on Friday in Kano while addressing newsmen, urged parents to send their children to school. He said that the ministry had put in place necessary measures to ensure that children did not contract any disease.'We have trained at least three staff members from all the schools to make sure that any child with any symptom of any sickness is traced and treated immediately,'' he said. The Kogi State Chairman of SSUSS, Comrade Ranti Ojo Mathew, informed that he had mobilised his members across the state to resume on Monday in view of the preparations made by the government to actualise the Monday resumptionHe said 'the government has bought bucket taps, liquid detergent and made available thermometer to check the temperature of the students if need be. The government has allayed the fears and besides, secondary schools are not the centre of Ebola. There is no need for us to delay the resumption.'Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Kwara State has said that teachers in the state will not resume until all provisions to prevent Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) are made by government. This is against the directive of the state government which had said that both public and private schools in the state should resume on Monday. The state Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Saka Onimago, had asked all schools to provide basic hygiene materials including washing bowls, soap and towels, just as the government directed two teachers from each school in the state to undergo training on Ebola prevention, as soon as the Federal Ministries of Health and Education provide necessary facilities.Hovewever, a statement signed by the NUT chairman, secretary and the publicity secretary in the state, Comrades Musa Abubakar, Ola Idris, and W. A. Jogbojogbo and made available to journalists in Ilorin on Friday, said the union had noted the inadequate measures taken by the government so far in schools and was of the opinion that schools could not resume on Monday.
