New York Jets Are All but Done, and Rex Ryan Will Take Fall for Team's Woes

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 06 Oct 2014

So, now it's official: Not even Mike Vick can save a capsized ship."I'm watching the Jets play San Diego," tweeted Joe Namath, the most famous Jet ever, "and it's no fun at all."That was the kind of game, a 31-0 loss, that likely caused Namath to burn his fur coat and Jets season pass.Former Jets offensive lineman Damien Woody tweeted the loss was maybe "the worse [sic] game I have seen from the Jets." He added: "How in the WORLD do u get shut out in the NFL'!!! This is professional football folks."Excellent question.Vick a savior' No, not Vick. Not Namath. Not Unitas or Montana or a super clone with all of their DNA. When receivers can't run, can't get open, can't follow proper routes, can't get a millimeter of separation, the only thing left for Vick to save is his own ass.The Jets had 12 penalties, eight punts, two turnovers and zero points. The Chargers are a good team, but Sid Gillman isn't coaching them.Rex Ryan's vaunted defense, the one he's always running his yap about, was torched by Philip Rivers and some dude named Branden Oliver, who had 114 yards rushing and two touchdowns. All of Ryan's talking. All of the "we can compete with anyone" stuff, and the past guarantees, and the bravado. It all means nothing now. What we know for certain is that Ryan will take the fall. This is the beginning of the end for Ryan in New Yorkunless next year he becomes the defensive coordinator of the Giants. This isn't hyperbole. This isn't guesswork, either. This is common sense. Ryan wasn't hired by his boss; he was inherited. The team is terrible, and I don't expect John Idzik, the general manager, to say, "Yeah, my bad, our personnel are terrible." He's going to make Ryan the scapegoat, and Ryan will head off to be some team's assistant head coach in charge of defense.Barring the owner stepping in, this will happen. Ryan will get fired. It's as sure a thing as there is in football right now. Not necessarily because he deserves it but because in the NFL, this is the order of things. When a team crumbles, it's usually not the GM that goes, especially the newly hired one. It's usually the head coach. There won't be a Jets resurgence, because there can't be with that roster. ESPN's Adam Caplan reported that of the last five Jets wide receivers picked in the draft since 2012, none are on the roster.Look at the next six games on the Jets' schedule and tell me which ones you think they'll win: home against Denver, at the Patriots, home against Buffalo, then at Kansas City, then home against the Steelers, followed by at Buffalo. The Broncos will destroy them. The Patriots aren't the Patriots, but they're still better than the Jets, and Buffalo just beat the Lions in Detroit. The Jets would be damn lucky to go 3-3, and still their record would go from 1-4 now to just 4-7 with five games to go.Crazier things have happened in sports, but the chances of New York making a run with Geno Smith at quarterback are practically nonexistent. In many ways, the San Diego game was Ryan's last stand. The Jets are done now. He's done now. It's not totally his fault, but he's done nonetheless. To be clear, this isn't me wanting this to happen, and again, Ryan didn't pick all the players. He has very little to coach. He also won't get fired midseason. It will be after the season is over and the Jets have five wins. If they're lucky. He'll become the scapegoat almost similarly to Jim Schwartz in Detroit. Schwartz could be a knucklehead, but he became the fall guy for a general manager that drafted too many players who got arrested and kicked dudes in the leg.Ryan will get torpedoed not so much because he can't coach but because he has nothing to coach.Don't think Ryan doesn't know this. He sees what's happening. There was a report recently from ESPN's Adam Schefter that stated some inside the Jetsorganization were upset Idzik didn't spend the $21 million in salary-cap room and left gargantuan holes in the roster.Schefter is one of the best there is, but it's not hard to establish where the sourcing on that originated. I can't see Idzik complaining about himself, so that story had to emerge from the coaching side. It sounded like some people were getting their alibis straight. After the Chargers game, Ryan provided a heartfelt apology "to our fans, those that are left."There are still some left. They're there. They'll be there.Ryan will be the one who's gone.Mike Freeman covers the NFL for Bleacher Report.
