8 killed, 9 injured in Bauchi explosion

FIVE people lost their lives instantly on Wednesday night, in a bomb blast that rocked Azare, the headquarters of Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, while 12 others sustained varying degree of injuries in the incident.The blast, it was gathered, occurred at about 9.45 p.m at the roundabout near the motor park in the town, about four hours drive from the state capital.The deceased were said to have been burnt beyond recognition.However, by Thursday afternoon, three of the 12 injured victims of the blast had also died, taking the death toll to eight.Though no one, as of the time of filing this report, had claimed responsibility for the explosion, sources informed that the bomb was planted near where people used to gather to eat noodles and tea.An eyewitness said he counted about 15 dead bodies at the scene of the blast, adding that the death toll might be higher, as some of the injury was critical.Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the state police command, Haruna Mohammed, said five people lost their lives in the incidents, while 12 others were injured.According to Mohammed, the scene was visited by a combined security forces, adding that victims of the blast were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) for treatment, while the charred remains of the deceased were taken to the mortuary.He added that the entire surrounding had been cordoned off and secured by police explosive ordinance disposal unit.Mohammed, however, said no arrest had been made by security operatives, saying that investigation had since commenced to ascertain the cause of the blast.
