Chelsea Transfer News: January Move for Gerard Pique Makes No Sense for Blues

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 25 Oct 2014

Chelsea are reportedly preparing a shock move for Barcelona's Gerard Pique in January, but the Spain international and former Manchester United centre-back would present a most illogical target for Jose Mourinho and the Blues. As reported by the Daily Express' Ben Jefferson, FIFA agent Francois Gallardo claims Pique is unsettled with his current club, and he believes he will end up in the Premier League, as he told Neox: "The player is angry and Barca are open to his departure. He could end up at Manchester United or Chelsea."Of course, if Gallardo is the source of these rumours, Blues fans should take them with more than just a single grain of salt. This is the same man who claimed Lionel Messi was on his way to Paris Saint-Germain, as he said on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito (h/t101greatgoals), and that Danny Welbeck was Real Madrid's target to replace Alvaro Morata, per Sport Witness' Tom Coast:Author and Spanish football expert Sid Low perhaps put it best:Gallardo isn't a credible source in any way. He has built a career out of making outrageous claims and occasionally gets lucky. In this case, he shouldn't.Pique has been a mainstay of Barcelona since 2008, moving back to his boyhood club after several unsuccessful seasons with the Red Devils. He quickly established himself as a dream fit for the team's tiki-taka system, winning a ton of silverware with the Catalans and the national team in the process. The 27-year-old was born in Barcelona and is as Catalan as they come. While Cesc Fabregas proved that is no guarantee a player will stay at the Camp Nou when he moved back to London, the two players' situation is differentFabregas was no longer wanted, while Pique is a regular starter, via WhoScored.com.Pique is an excellent fit for Luis Enrique's system thanks to his ability on the ball, but as a traditional centre-back, he has his limitations. He's not as physically strong as his size would suggest, he's not very fast and he's never been particularly adept at dealing with pressure. It's why his performances have gone downhill since the retirement of Carles Puyol, perfectly illustrated by the dreadful outing he had against Ajax in the Champions League. His performance was so underwhelming, ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan even dreaded the idea of him starting Saturday's Clasico against Real Madrid:Pique is not a bad defenderfar from it. But he's not an elite centre-back either, and he is most certainly not worth a 20 million investment in January, as Jefferson suggests.Chelsea have shied away from buying high-priced veterans who don't fill a specific need in the past two seasons, and as of right now, the Blues are defensively solid. John Terry and Gary Cahill form one of the Premier League's best partnerships, and Branislav Ivanovic is also an option to play in the central areas.Kurt Zouma provides excellent cover for the position, and the Blues still have Tomas Kalas out on loan, widely tipped as a future star at the centre of their defence.Meanwhile, Barcelona had to scramble to sign Belgium's Thomas Vermaelen as cover for the central areas during the summer, and the Blaugrana simply can't afford to sell one of their best defenders in the middle of the season. Unless the offer is monstrous, Pique won't move.Chelsea won't make such an offer. They have no need for another defenderand especially for one who has struggled in the past 12 months and may not be a great fit for the Premier League to begin with.Follow @ReverschPass
