Ben Tate's Fantasy Football Value Remains Limited with Minnesota Vikings

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 23 Nov 2014

This was supposed to be the year many fantasy football enthusiasts had been waiting for. After spending his first four seasons with the Houston Texans in the shadow of Arian Foster, former second-round draft pick, running back Ben Tate, finally earned a starting role.In three years (Tate spent his rookie season on injured reserve), he showed an explosive burst through the line of scrimmage, breakaway speed and elusiveness that resulted in no worse than an average of 4.3 yards per carry in any season. Oh my, how things changed following Tate's move to the Cleveland Browns.Injury reared its ugly head early in the season, and Tate was forced to miss time; however, when he returned, he began posting the numbers we all expected. He put up 124 yards on the Tennessee Titans, followed by 78 yards and two touchdowns on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then, all of a sudden, the wheels just fell off. Here's a look at the meager numbers the ball-carrier produced over his next five outings:The sad part about those statistics is that none of those opposing teams are ranked any higher than 19th in the league against opposing fantasy running backs, via ESPN.com.Not only did fantasy owners finally have enough of Tate's lack of productionhe's now only owned in 56.5 percent of ESPN.com fantasy leaguesCleveland had enough as well, via ESPN's Adam Schefter:Of course, a running back like Tate, who boasts past success in Houston, would certainly intrigue several running back-needy teams. According to ESPN's Field Yates, of the three teams in contention for his services, the Minnesota Vikings snatched him up due to having the worst record:All fantasy football players can sympathize with that. So, once again, Tate has a new home. However, he's in no better shape now than when he was losing reps in Cleveland. Why' Because he's buried behind similar running backs.Rookie Terrance West began to steal Tate's carries earlier this season due to his explosiveness and game-breaking ability. Isaiah Crowell joined in on the fun as a hard-running, complementary back who could get tough yards and find the end zone. That should sound very familiar to what the Vikings have going on with rookie Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata. McKinnon broke into Minnesota's starting lineup after showcasing his speed, but Asiata continued to earn reps as a chain-moving, goal-line seeking back.In fact, here's a great look at how similar these backfields actually are:As you can see, Tate isn't in any better of a situation.Adding to the minimal expected value of the running back in Minnesota, offensive coordinator Norv Turner basically alluded to bringing in Tate as an insurance policy during an interview withChris Tomasson of TwinCities.com:Obviously, we're in a situation where (Wednesday) we had one back that could practice, so the timing of (Tate) being released and the opportunity for us to add a back, certainly it was good timing. ...We're excited about Jerick and what he's done and I see him as our running back. He's been limited in practice last week and couldn't practice (Wednesday). So you got to protect yourself, obviously with Matt not being able to practice (Wednesday) and in doubt as to whether he'll play or not.According to theSt. Paul Pioneer Press, Asiata has already been ruled out for Sunday's game:So, we'll get a small glimpse of Tate, but don't expect too much. More than likely, he'll be filling in as a spot starterspelling McKinnon from time to time until Asiata gets healthy. Once he's able to return, expect Tate to drop to third on the team's depth chart. If you happen to have extra bench room that you don't know what to do with, go ahead and snatch Tate off the waiver wire. It's been a crazy year, and you never know what could happen on the injury front. However, keep your expectations low, and don't expect Tate to have any sort of fantasy relevance for the remainder of the season.
