Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Arsene Wenger, Potential Successors

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 27 Nov 2014

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called for everyone involved with the Gunners to get behind the club, as rumours of potential successors continue to surface. The longtime Gunners boss is under fire for the team's disappointing start to the 2014-15 season and his inability to deliver consistent silverware in the last years, with even people inside the club lashing out at the Frenchman. And with the list of possible replacements slowly starting to take shape, speculation regarding Wenger's future will only grow. Here's the latest news regarding Arsenal's manager-situation.Arsene WengerIn the wake of major shareholder Alisher Usmanov's harsh words at the address of Wenger in an interview with CNBC, via ESPN FC's Kevin Palmer, Wenger has asked everyone involved with the club to unite under the Arsenal name.As reported by BBC Sport, the 65-year-old relayed a message of solidarity ahead of the Gunners' Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund:Everybody has the right to have an opinion, having said that, we have values at this club. During the 18 years I have been here, I have shown that I can take criticism.I don't take [Usmanov's comments] personally at all.It is an opinion that I respect, but when you are from this club, you are from this club. You are in or out, you cannot be both. What is important is how close we are together inside the club and how much we can respond to people who question our quality.Usmanov told CNBC he believes Wenger isn't solving any of the major problems that have troubled the club for years, casting doubt over how much support the Frenchman still has from Arsenal's board.Wenger signed a new contract with the Gunners in May of this year and isn't expected to be sacked or resign anytime soon, with his current deal running through the 2016-17 season.Arsenal currently sit eighth in the Premier League standings, well below aspirations but only two points out of the fourth and final Champions League spot.Injuries and poor form have taken their toll on the squad early in the campaign, but with a long season still ahead, it seems unlikely Wenger will be relieved of his duties anytime soon.Jurgen KloppOne of the men most often linked with the job of managing Arsenal, should it come available, is Borussia Dortmund's Jurgen Klopp, who recently dropped a hint he would be open to the idea of moving to England in an interview with BT Sport, per ESPN FC:It's the only country, I think, where I should work, really, next to Germany, because it's the only country I know the language a little bit and I need the language for my work. So we will see. If somebody will call me, then we will talk about it.Klopp is one of the most popular young managers in world football, courtesy of his excellent work in Dortmund. Once on the brink of extinction, the German turned around the club's fate on his way to consecutive Bundesliga titles and an appearance in the Champions League final.Die Schwarzgelben are going through a difficult domestic campaign, however, and coupled with the club's inability to keep hold of their top players, it has led to speculation the manager could be ready to move on.The Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel believes Wednesday's top clash at the Emirates Stadium could double as an audition of sorts for Klopp:But what better way for Klopp to leave a lasting impact on Arsenal's decision makers than to secure victory tonight' The problem Arsenal have, though, is their unwavering loyalty to Wenger could yet see them miss out on Klopp. He's a wanted man. If Arsenal don't want him now, then there will be clubs all over Europe - big onesthat will.Should Klopp move on to his next big project before the end of the 2016-17 season, Arsenal will likely miss out on the 47-year-old's services. And GianlucaDiMarzio.com's David Amoyal thinks it's likely he won't wait that long:While fans would likely love to see Klopp take control of the club once Wenger's time is over, the timing seems to make such a scenario nearly impossible.Roberto ManciniRoberto Mancini has only just started his second stint with Inter Milan, but he's already talking about his desire to manage the Gunners at some point in the future. In an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport (h/t Goal's Chris Davie) indicated it may still come to pass, saying: "I would have loved to have managed Arsenal, a club with a special charm. But there is still time."English fans know Mancini best from his time with Manchester City, where supported by wealthy new owners, he took the club to the Champions League and won the Citizens their first Premier League title in over 40 years. He was sacked in 2013 and took over as manager from Galatasaray, a marriage that lasted only one season. Now back with Inter, he guided the Nerazzurri to a 1-1 draw in the derby against AC Milan in his only match on the bench so far.Wenger will likely remain in charge of the Gunners for another three seasons, at which point Mancini could be ready to move on from Inter, the club where he first rose to international fame.Whether Arsenal fans would want him after his spell at the helm of City is another matter, but of all the candidates that have so far expressed an interest in the job, the Italian will likely carry the best combination of pedigree and availability.Follow @ReverschPassRead more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
