CM Punk's Comments on WWE Departure Shouldn't Close Door on a Potential Return

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 28 Nov 2014

If the Ultimate Warrior can make a triumphant return to WWE television, then it would be foolish to confidently believe fans have seen the last of CM Punk in WWE.Fans have speculated for months about Punk's motivation(s) for leaving the company and not looking back. The five-time world champion presented his side of the story in Colt Cabana's most recent episode of The Art of Wrestling podcast.Punk indicated that health problems were the driving force behind his departure, via Sean Ross Sapp of WrestlingInc.com:Punk said that the main reason that he left the company after the Royal Rumble was due to injuries, notably broken ribs sustained at the hands of Ryback. He also worked through a concussion and fever all while his checks got smaller. He suffered a concussion early in the 2014 Royal Rumble match and still worked over 40 minutes. Despite suffering a concussion, he still passed a concussion test while paying little to no attention to it. He scoffed at the test, saying it was 'bull----.'Punk also criticized WWE's medical staff, telling Cabana that he'd unknowingly wrestled with a staph infection, which was only discovered after he visited a doctor from outside of the company. In addition, differences of opinion with Triple H led to Punk souring on WWE, per Sapp:Regarding his relationship with Triple H, Punk said that he never had good vibes around him. He'd always heard that Triple H didn't like him, but wasn't sure. He added it up because Triple H would always look at him sideways and was really indirect with him. [...]Punk said that when he was leaving the company after The Royal Rumble, he had a conversation with Vince McMahon, and said that Triple H needed to be in the room too. Punk ripped into Triple H for cutting off his momentum in 2011, and told Triple H that he shouldn't have been putting over a semi-retired wrestler during his hottest period. Punk and Cabana noted that Triple H essentially came out of retirement to beat Punk, and then went back into retirement shortly thereafter. This is only a small snapshot into the hours-long chat between Punk and Cabana, the entirety of which is worth a listen. One of the biggest takeaways is that the relationship between CM Punk and WWE has almost completely crumbled. Some expected this, but to hear the extent to which Punk has fallen out of love with wrestling is surprising.Of course, we're talking about a wrestler who built entire angles about potentially leaving two different wrestling companies and holding their respective world titles hostage. He's such a brilliant wrestling mind that there's always a question as to whether Punk's merely planting the seeds for the next major storyline or if he's speaking the truth. With that said, it seems extremely unlikely that Punk breaking a months-long silence is a part of some forthcoming comeback. With the way that he criticized Triple H, who is positioned as the heir apparent to Vince McMahon, it's hard to see who has enough clout to attempt rebuilding the bridge with Punk to the extent that the two parties could work together again. If history has proven anything in the wrestling business, though, it's that time/money heals all wounds. Countless superstars have walked away from the business, seemingly forever, only to come back after prolonged absences. One of the bigger names recently was the Ultimate Warrior, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame days before his death in April 2014.Warrior left right before the 1992 Survivor Series. His departure was so abrupt and so close to the date of the show that he was featured on promotional material for the pay-per-view. This wasn't the first time he'd left the company, and it wouldn't be his last following his brief run in 1996.In the proceeding years, many fans believed Warrior to be persona non grata in the company.Further emboldening that view was a WWE DVD titled The Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior in 2005, which some saw as a smear job that attempts to rewrite the history surrounding one of wrestling's biggest stars in the early 1990s.Many likely gave up the idea of Warrior ever entering a WWE ring again, but it happened eventually. Stephanie McMahon even acknowledged the unlikelihood of McMahon and Warrior sharing an embrace:Over time, the animosity between Warrior and WWE simmered, and the two sides hashed out their differences. It took decades, but it happened. To a somewhat lesser extent, Brock Lesnar looked to be in the same boat after he left in 2004. WWE pushed Lesnar to the moon in a way that hasn't been replicated since. He looked to be the franchise guy for the 2000s, and then he left WWE in order to pursue a football career.Lesnar's successful time in UFC seemingly put even more distance between he and WWE.And then WWE decided to drop a boatload of money in his lap while also allowing him to work a limited schedule.Eight years after he exited, Lesnar returned. And then he won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2014, beating Punk the year before. Now, all of that is not to say that Punk's return is on the horizon, like he's gonna be a surprise entrant in the 2015 Royal Rumble and show up for a big WrestleMania angle. It's become a running joke that anything Punk does somehow foreshadows his return. For all intents and purposes, Punk seems intent to chill out and find pursuits outside of wrestling to keep him occupied. At this point, it seems the fans want him back more than anything else. It's a testament to Punk's continued popularity that his interview with Cabana created such a buzz. Cabana's podcast website crashed on Thanksgiving:In addition, The Art of Wrestling climbed to No. 2 among iTunes' top audio podcasts:Maybe fans have seen the end of Punk in WWE. Maybe he'll never love wrestling again and never want to come back.Only in wrestling could you have so many signs pointing in one directionCM Punk's full-blown retirement from the businessyet come to the conclusion that his career isn't quite over yet. Hey, crazier things have happened.
