Arsenal Transfer News: Morgan Schneiderlin Rumours Must Turn into January Bid

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 22 Dec 2014

Arsenal are reportedly preparing a substantial offer for Southampton starMorgan Schneiderlinand in the wake of the Gunners' disappointing draw against Liverpool, those rumours have to turn into a transfer bid in January.According to the Daily Telegraph (h/t Daily Star's Bruce Archer), Arsene Wenger will go head-to-head with north-London rivals Tottenham for the Frenchman's services, knowing full well Spurs already had a 10 million offer rejected during the summer window.Saints manager Ronald Koeman remains adamant Schneiderlin won't be moved, as reported by the Daily Mail:We will sell nobody in January. Morgan's attitude is fantastic - everybody knows that he had a difficult time in the summer, but finally he accepted his situation and he's doing his best and looking forward to returning to playing.Koeman is, of course, referring to the fact Schneiderlin openly declared he wanted to leave during the summer, prompting the offer from Tottenham. The 25-year-old midfielder was one of the few Southampton stars who didn't move, and in hindsight, that turned out to be the right decision. The Saints had an excellent start to the 2014-15 campaign and are in position to battle for the European slots, although their fortunes have somewhat changed recently with four losses in their last five Premier League outings. If anything, Schneiderlin greatly improved his value on the open market. He's been instrumental in Koeman's squad, shielding the back four and contributing to the buildup play. How important has he been' Just have a look at this statistic from NOW TV:Of course Koeman doesn't want to sell him in Januarythe Dutchman is in his first season at the club and exceeding all expectations, and he knows all too well he will need the talented midfielder to continue this run of success.According to Metro, Schneiderlin has come to terms with the fact he won't be leaving in January:Convincing the club to sell won't be an easy task, but that's not the road Arsenal have to take. Convincing Schneiderlin the time for a move is now would be far easier. Just last month, he told Get French Football (h/t Daily Star's Colin Harvey) he wanted to play for a big club, in spite of Southampton's sparkling form:I am fortunate to playing for a team in good form. It allows me to perform well.If you would have told me that Southampton would be second in the Premier League, I would not have believed you.The club has recruited well.A career goes by very quickly. My aim is to play for a big club. Today I'm at Southampton. As odd as it may sound, Arsenal's biggest selling point is the clear need they have in the centre of the pitch. Leading 2-1 against 10-man Liverpool on Sunday, Wenger decided to field a total of seven defensive-minded players in a desperate attempt to hold onto their advantage, per Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe:You can't blame a headed equaliser on the lack of a quality holding midfielder, but it should never have come that far to begin with. The Gunners were woeful controlling the lead and never had that calming, physical presence to block the Reds' persistent attacking motions. If Wenger moves for Schneiderlin in January, he'll be doing it for two reasons: He's desperate for a quality player at the holding-midfielder position and wants his compatriot so badly that he's willing to overpay. And according to Bleacher Report's Ryan Bailey and Janusz Michallik, desperation time is starting to kick in when it comes to the defensive slots:It's the kind of dream transfer Schneiderlin was begging for in the summer, and he'd slide into the starting XI and be a contributor from day one. The Frenchman wouldn't be the first to look at those prospects and twist his current team's arm until he gets his transfer. Are the odds of a transfer going down in January in the Gunners' favour' No. But given the club's clear lack of quality at the position and the persistent rumours that have no doubt reached Schneiderlin and given hope to Gooners all over the world, Wenger has to push forward and make a substantial offer.Follow @ReverschPassRead more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
