Oyo State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Ajiboye Omodewu, has urged parents to always encourage their wards to participate in sporting activities.Omodewu gave the admonition at the 4th Inter-House Sports Competition of Bishop Akinyele Grammar School, Oke- Are, Ibadan, held at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan recently.According to him, 'we need to appreciate our parents' support for sporting activities in our schools. In the past, only few parents urged their children to participate in sports. Though, the situation has changed but we need to appeal to parents who do not believe in sports.'Sport is very good and it keeps body and soul fit. Apart from the economic gains derivable from it, it's good for one's health and we should all encourage our young ones to participate actively in sports, in conjunction with their academic abilities,' Omodewu said. The commissioner stressed that the Sen. Abiola Ajimobi administration in the state would continue encourage sports in our schools and the state in general, noting that the government was ready to change the face of not only sports but other areas, in order to restore the glory of the state as a 'Pace Setter'.In his own address, the principal of the school, Reverent Canon E. B. Mabadeje commended the state government for the efforts it had been making to restore the lost glory of sports and games in Oyo State. He urged thegovernment to make deliberate efforts to invest in sporting activities in secondary schools, support inter-house athletics competitions of this type, organise and sponsor inter-schools competition during which young talents will be fished out and given necessary training exposure.Mabadeje admonished parents to encourage their children to discover their talents and give them all the necessary support morally, psychologically and financially, so as to make them excel in displaying their God-given talents.
