Enyimba deserve national honour

Published by Punch on Sun, 20 Nov 2011

Officials and players of two-time African champions Enyimba deserve to be honoured for their exploits domestically and internationally, some stakeholders in the sports industry have opined. The Federal Government recently bestowed national awards on former Nigeria Football Association chairman, Ibrahim Galadima and Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, who is Nigerias most capped player ever. But some stakeholders are of the opinion that Enyimbas giant strides should have been recognised. Enyimba have won an incredible 29 trophies since 2001 and they became the first Nigerian side to win the CAF Champions League in 2003, breaking a 39-year jinx.Former Super Eagles coach, Adegboye Onigbinde, said Enyimba deserved to be honoured but added that the selectors had their basis for picking those they felt deserved to be honoured. He said, My views on the issue are irrelevant because they have a committee that selects nominees for the awards. If they threw the selection open, they (Enyimba) would have merited a place alongside other achievers in the sports sector.Crown FC of Ogbomosho coach, Godfrey Esu, believes Enyimba would be honoured in the nearest future.Enyimba are one of the best clubs in Nigeria and Africa. The statistics are there to show. But I believe if they would be honoured in the future. Everybody cannot be given the award the same time. Galadima and Yobo deserved their awards for their efforts in sports development and number of matches they have played for Nigeria respectively, Esu said.Vice Chairman, Edo Football Association, Frank Ilaboya, is of the opinion that Enyimbas exploits deserve commendation but says the duo honoured deserved their awards.
