Excitement, As Oando Games Flags Off In Lagos

THERE was usual excitement at the Apapa Club, Lagos, yesterday, as the much-awaited maiden edition of the Oando Games tournament flagged off. The tourney began with a 1 kilometer Walk around Apapa and will see participants contesting in all the six sports section of the club till November 25.Speaking with The Guardian shortly after flagging off the tournament yesterday, the President of Apapa Club said that he was optimistic that the event would live up to expectation of the club and management of Oando, adding that it would further cement the partnership between them.The president, who was represented at the flag-off ceremony by another top member of the Club, Chuma Ezenwa, said that everything needed to make the game a hitch-free had been put in place.Also speaking, the Games and Sports Secretary of Apapa Club, Dozie Udeze, said that Oando had been sponsoring competitions in the Squash and Tennis sections of the club in the last three years, but decided to extend it to other sections this time around to give everyone an opportunity to show his or her skills.Udeze hinted that members of Apapa club would use the on-going Oando Games to fine-tune their preparation for this year's Quadrangular Games, which will take place next month in the state.The Chief Executive Officer of NichePR, Mrs. Marcella Iyitor, said that the sponsor (Oando), was using the game as part of its social responsibilities to the society it operates, adding that the oil company had to lead by example knowing that its major facility is situated in Apapa.She enjoined other corporate organizations to emulate the good work of Oando, especially in the area of sports, stressing that staging such games regularly would help in building healthy body for the participants.The maiden Oando Games is a team and individual sports and members of Apapa club will do battle in Tennis, Squash, Table Tennis, Darts, Snooker, Scrabble, Chess and Ayo.
