New York Mayor De Blasio Is Meeting With The Heads Of The Police Unions Today

Amidst a barrage of public criticism and slights,Mayor Bill de Blasiois scheduled to sit down with the heads of the five police unions in a meeting closed to the public on Tuesday.The heads of law enforcement unions have accused the mayor of undermining the NYPD with his statements about the danger police pose to his sonDante de Blasioafter a Staten Island grand jury voted not to indict an officer in the chokehold death ofEric Garner."We've had to literally train him, as families have all over this city for decades, in how to take special care in any encounter he has with the police officers who are there to protect him," de Blasio said afterward.The unions have also grumbled over the mayor's meeting with the people who have organized large anti-police rallies across the city and his relationship with Rev. Al Sharpton.After two officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, were shot and killed in Bed-Stuy by a man claiming to avenge the death of Garner, the unions accused the mayor of creating an anti-police climate."Mayor de Blasio, the blood of these two officers is clearly on your hands. It is your failed policies and actions that enabled this tragedy to occur. I only hope and pray that more of these ambushes and executions do not happen again," said Ed Mullins, president of theDetectives Endowment Association.Police officers have turned their backs to the mayor in public as a show of disrespect on three separate occasions since the officers' deaths.NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton has pointed out that the unions are currently engaged in contract negotiations with the city.The Captains Endowment Association, Lieutenants Benevolent Association, Sergeants Benevolent Association, Detectives' Endowment Association, and Patrolmen's Benevolent Association are all expected to attend the meeting.The mayor's press office did not say when or where the meeting would take place, but said it is closed to the press.Join the conversation about this story
