Enugu-Onitsha Road: Minister Orders Contractor To Accelerate Work

Published by Guardian on Sun, 20 Nov 2011

Obi Sacks TradersMINISTER of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, has directed the contractor handling the reconstruction of the Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway to accelerate work on the gully erosion site that devastated the Omagba axis of the road.Onolememen gave the directive yesterday while inspecting parts of the road with Governor Peter Obi.He instructed the contractor to raise manpower in order to keep to the contract schedule and have the road motorable before Christmas. He explained that the road is of importance to the Federal Government because of its strategic location and the heavy traffic it receives daily. He said that the road is going to benefit from the proposed deregulation of petroleum products.Obi in his remark said that the state government would commence perimeter fencing of Bridge Head to Upper-Iweka axis as part of measures to beautify the area.He stated that the fencing would equally protect road users and ensure free flow of traffic. While inspecting the Bridge Head and Upper Iweka end of the road, Obi directed all traders and others on the service lanes to vacate the area immediately. He said this would facilitate reconstruction, as government would not allow any interference to impede the pace of work.He said government would commence immediate enforcement of existing law against street trading. He enjoined traders to go back into any of the markets in the area for their businesses. It will be recalled that the governor made representations to the Federal Government to allow it fund the project and be paid thereafter.
