CITN tasks govt on efficient tax system, inducts 1491 members

THE President of Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Mr. John Femi Sunday has stressed the need for efficient and professionalised tax system while inducting 1491 members.Speaking at the 25th Induction ceremony in Lagos recently, Sunday explained that 'a well professional tax system portends a lot of benefit informs our continuous emphasis for professionalisation of the system.According to him, 'it is no longer news that what is required to drive our economy and assist in the realisation of the millennium development goals is a diversification of the economy with emphasis on taxation.He noted that 'we believes that an improved operational efficiency of the Nigeria tax system will accelerate government's effort as it leverages on taxation as a viable source of revenue generation as is applicable in developed countries.He continued: This will open a new vista of opportunities, which will reduce our dependence on oil revenue, which is not only dangerous but unsustainable.'We are more that determine to collaborate with various stakeholders to enhance the manpower capacity of the tax system through training and re-orientation of the workforce in various agencies,' he said.He urged the governments at all levels to go a long way to improving the effectiveness of their revenue agencies while at the same time strengthen the confidence of taxpayers in the Nigerian system.Sunday added that it is appropriate to continuously increase the pool of professionals who drive the professionalisation of Nigeria's tax system in view of the expected benefits derivable from diversifying the country's revenue base.
