Etisalat, British Council sponsor training for Oyo teachers

Published by Punch on Tue, 22 Nov 2011

Thirty teachers from selected schools across Oyo State have concluded a special English Language training sponsored by Etisalat Nigeria. The training, done in partnership with the British Council, was aimed at making the participating teachers have a better grasp of the English Language, while also availing them the opportunity to be Cambridge University accredited instructors by virtue of participating in the Teaching Knowledge Test. The Commissioner for Education, Oyo State, Mrs. Tokunbo Fayokun, highlighted the need to continually improve the skills of educators and instructors across all levels of education. "We are all aware of the challenges in the educational sector, especially the poor performances of our students in recent times. We cannot deny the fact that the situation will improve if our teachers and instructors are adequately trained to perform their duties," she said.Fayokun, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. B. V. Bello, noted that the falling standard of education in Nigeria could be traced to insufficient skills of the instructors. She added that all hands must to be on the deck to address the problem and commended Etisalat for rising up to the challenge through the Teachers Training initiative. The Director, Brands and Communications, Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Enitan Denloye, said the company was committed to sustainable development of the country. He stated that this was a major reason the firm was focusing much of its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts on education.
