Fuel queues surface in Abuja

Fuel queues resurfaced in most parts of the Federal Capital Territory on Monday after almost seven months of respite from the scarcity of petroleum products. The scarcity, which was first noticed on Friday, was attributed to panic buying by some filling station operators.As early as 7:00am on Monday, motorists were seen positioning themselves in front of the stations in anticipation of filling their tanks before the situation got worse.Our correspondent, who monitored the situation, observed that most filling stations within the metropolis were selling fuel but had to contend with long queues of vehicles waiting patiently to get the product. While most of them sold petrol at the official price of N65 per litre, it was, however, gathered that at least one station on the outskirts of Abuja sold for N72.At Eterna filling station along Obafemi Awolowo Road, Jabi, one of the attendants, who spoke to our correspondent, said he could not explain why other filling stations were not selling. In its reaction, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation said it had stepped up fuel supply to the FCT and other parts of the nation to meet demand.The Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division, NNPC, Dr. Levi Ajuonuma, disclosed this in a statement while dismissing the resurgence of fuel queues around Abuja.
