He never influenced use of stories

Former Editor and Managing Director of The Guardian, Mr. Lade Bonuola, on Monday said the late Publisher of The Guardian, Alex Ibru, never asked him to use or kill stories when he was the Editor. He paid a glowing tribute to the entrepreneur, whom he described as "publisher of publishers." Bonuola, who spoke in a brief interview with our correspondent on Monday, urged Nigerians to emulate the lifestyle of the late publisher. He said, "Alex Ibru was a publisher of publishers. He gave Nigeria a worthy legacy in The Guardian. "He always allowed journalists and other workers in his employ to do their work without interference. When I was the Editor of the paper, he never for once told me to remove or put anything. Even when I was the MD, the same situation prevailed." Also, a member of Editorial Board of The Guardian, Prof. Wale Omole, said one unique characteristic of Alex Ibru that could not be easily wished away was his humility, honesty and conscientiousness. He said, "Alex Ibru started a paper that will leverage with everyone; will clear every person and consider issues that matter to the generality of the people with truth and conscience. If nothing else, The Guardian is enough to immortalise him."
