Ibafo residents lament absence of pedestrian bridge

Residents of Ibafo in Obafemi Owode Local Government of Ogun state have cried out over the incessant killings of their children by hit-and-run drivers on Lagos ' Ibadan Expressway.Ibafo is a new settlement in Obafemi ' Owode Local Government. The area is growing at a very rapid rate as some people now reside in the settlement due to population explosion in Lagos and its environs.However, there has been an incessant cases of killings of school children and women by hit-and-run vehicles while trying to cross the Lagos'Ibadan Expressway.Some of the residents who spoke with Community News on the situation noted that the case was because of the failure of the successive governments in the state to construct a pedestrian bridge in the area to take care of the problem.They lamented that the former governor of the state, Chief Gbenga Daniel, in 2003 during his governorship campaign to the area, promised to construct a pedestrian bridge in the area had but that nothing was done.Alhaji Mudashiru Egbedire, a community leader in the area, told Community News that the most pressing need of the area was the pedestrian bridge.'Government should come to our aids. We need a pedestrian bridge. This is a busy area and the vehiclar movement is very high, school children are being killed on weekly basis by hit and run drivers.'Another community leader, Deacon Bayo Olaoye, lamented that politicians always come to the area to solicit for their votes during elections, without putting anything back. 'Ordinarilly, we told the governor during campaign that we needed a pedestrian bridge urgently and he promised to do.Olaoye appealed to the Bi-Courteney, the company handling the re-construction of Lagos-Ibadan Express road to include the construction of the bridge in the design.He said the community leader had on several occasions complained to the council chairman about the problem. 'We went to lodge complaint at the council, but we were told that the local council could not embark on such project because of the financial implications, hence we called on Bi-Courtney to come to our rescue
