Drivers want Okeho-Igana road repaired

Published by Tribune on Tue, 22 Nov 2011

The popular Okeho-Iganna highway in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State has become a death trap and the people of the area, especially road users, are begging the state government to reconstruct it in order to prevent the incessant carnage on the road. This appeal was made, by Lukman Ajisafe, a commercial driver plying the road on daily basis. Ajisafe, who operates from Ojoo Garage in Ibadan, said the road which linked Ibadan with other towns in the northern parts of Oyo State, was in a bad shape and was becoming unmotorable.According to the driver, 'we spoke with a politician in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State sometimes ago and he told us that the state government could do anything to fix the road during the raining season. We quite understood his position at that time , but now that the raining season is over, we expect the state government to mobilise its road maintenance engineers and workers to the road to commence rehabilitation work,' he advised. Also, Mr Sola Aremu, another commercial driver using a Toyota Hiace to ply Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, buttressed the assertion of Mr Ajisafe, saying this was the right season for rehabilitation work to start on Okeho-Iganna road if the state government really wants to prevent accidents on the road.It will be recalled that the people of Okeho and Iganna, two prominent towns in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, had on several occasions called on the state government to help repair the bad road. The position of indigenes of the two towns was that armed robbers often operate freely on Okeho-Iganna road since the robbers have realised that vehicles travelling to Oke-Ogun areas of the state cannot move fast on the road. Many travellers have been attacked, robbed on the road, while some people have complained bitterly about the increasing rate of vehicular accidents on the road.
