Oyo: NDLEA destroys 24.7 tonnes of cannabis

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Ahmadu Giade, has restated the agency's readiness to step up strategies of eliminating drug trafficking and abuse of narcotic drugs in the society.Giade said this at the public destruction of seized drug exhibits at Idigbaro, Ologuneru in Ido Local Government of Oyo State on Tuesday.In all, 24.7 tonnes of cannabis was seized by the Oyo State Command of the NDLEA. The outlawed drug, according to the agency, included those seized from convicts, drug addicts and abandoned ones.Giade said, "Record of drug seizures, arrests and prosecution reflects that our control effort is in progress. This is a clear warning that drug barons have lost the battle to make our fellow citizens drug traffickers and addicts. It is also an indication that our desire for peaceful, healthy and safe society is attainable."Only recently, he said, the State Command seized 9,000kg of cannabis in a single operation. To him, such seizure showed the desperation of drug barons in the society.He said, "The volume of seizures recorded in the state demanded aggressive enlightenment to protect people from the problem of drug abuse." He called for the support of governments at all levels.
