Gas leakage responsible for Lagos explosion

Brittania-U Nigeria Limited, one of Nigeria's indigenous marginal field producers, has refuted the claim that the Marina explosion that occurred on Monday was as a result of bomb explosion, disclosing that it was due to gas leakage in its Floating Production Storage Unit (FPSU).The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Thomas G. Meredith, stated that the company's FPSU, which is a production facility called Brittania-U 1, was undergoing maintenance and re-engineering services at Marina Jetty, Lagos, and suddenly, there was a gas leakage from the cylinders used for welding jobs on the facility, which resulted in the explosion.Meredith pointed out that the management of the company had always observed all normal safety checks and processes before commencing any operations, as was the case before the commencement of the welding job.
