Dosu, Emeteole disagree on Mikel

Published by Punch on Thu, 24 Nov 2011

Former Heartland coach Kelechi Emeteole and a former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Joseph Dosu, have differed on what Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, should do with Mikel Obi after the Chelsea midfielder opted out of Nigerias recent friendly games, claiming injury.Mikel featured for the London side in a Premier League game against Liverpool on Sunday, just days after his injury claim. Keshi had said he would be disappointed if Mikel played for his club after the injury claim but later said the player could decide if he was fit for the national team, a comment Emeteole considered as a sign of resignation.Emeteole said Keshi risked having indiscipline among the players if Mikel was not punished."Keshi has to be firm on this matter. If he allows Mikel to get away with it, the rest of the team might misinterpret it," Emeteole said."It is better for Keshi to establish his authority on the players at this stage of rebuilding the team, and prove to them that no one is more important than the team. This doesnt mean Mikel is not a good player, it simply means nobody is indispensable."Dosu, however, advised Keshi to go by the doctors report on the player before taking a decision. He said, "Mikel came with a report from the Chelsea doctors but Keshi will need to confirm with the Eagles doctors if there was authenticity in the claim. I wont advise Keshi to punish him unless there is a fault with the injury claim."Inasmuch as we dont want indiscipline in the team, Keshi cannot afford to have a disunited squad based on a players antics."
