Fire outbreak: Communitydemands new voter cards

Published by Tribune on Thu, 24 Mar 2011

Following a fire outbreak which razed about 65 houses in Ilaje community in Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, political leaders and Baale of the  community have  appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide alternative voter registration cards for them. The residents stated that  they had been disefranchised by  the  fire disaster  while everything belonging to them also got destroyed. The residents made their demand through Hon. Rotimi Abiru, chairman of Bariga LCDA Sulaimon Omoyele, Action Congress of Nigeria ACN House of representatives candidate in the April election, Deji Jakande and the Baale Kayode Ayetiwa, when the state government, in collaboration with the politicians and the council presented some relief materials to the Baale for  distribution to those affected.Relief items given out were 100 mattresses and blankets, 500-T shirts and N3 million.According to them, the fire  razed down about 65 houses , which housed  more than 2, 000 registered voters and  their  property, as well as their voters cards. They said that if INEC  failed to provide them with alternative cards they would not be able to vote  in the April poll.Abiru said, they had appealed to INEC to issue the  duplicate of the voters card  to the affected, so that they would be able to  participate in the forthcoming election. This is a highly  populated area and we have about 2,000 registered voters here, and it will not be of interest to us if their cards were not retrieved .So I am appealing to INEC to quicken the process of re-issuing duplicate voter cards for the people of this community so that they can perform their  civic right, Abiru said.
