Published by Punch on Fri, 25 Nov 2011

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has reiterated the need for the country to give serious attention to agriculture and accord less priority to the petroleum sector. The governor said this during a two-day retreat organised by the state government at the Training and Conference Centre, Ogere, for top political and bureaucratic officials in the state to review the journey so far in the six-month-old administration and chart the way forward into the future.Governor Amosun explained that agriculture remained one of his administrations five cardinal programmes and that government would do all it could to revive all the moribund farm settlements established by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who used agriculture as an instrument to industrialise the old Western Region.According to him, We are not too happy with the state of our farm settlements located across the state, the state governmentwould do all it can to ensure that the moribund farm settlements are put into proper shape. We have equally learnt that only 15 per cent of our land is being cultivated. This is unacceptable to us. We would encourage our young ones to go back into farming. We have equally concluded plans to establish agro-processing industries to further encourage our farmers. The governor solicited for the cooperation of public servants in the state towards ensuring the successful implementation of his administrations programmes, adding that the civil servants had prominent roles to play in the implementation of his five-point agenda.
