Chief Judge, AG back new criminal law

The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Inumidun Akande and the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, have applauded the enactment of the Criminal Law 2011 of the state, describing it as a welcome development.They said maintaining law and order and punishing criminal acts had always been a challenge to the society. They added that the need to address new threats to existence of the society through advances in technology must always come with reforms.Akande and Ipaye spoke at a stakeholders forum to appraise the new law.The Chief Judge said a mega city like Lagos must provide law to enable law enforcement agencies to take care of offences that threatened law and order.Akande said, The repealed Criminal Code Schedule, which the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011replaced, had not undergone any major reforms since 1916, when it was introduced to the rest of Nigeria. It was first introduced to Northern Nigeria in 1904.Akande, however, warned on the dangers of over-criminalisation, saying that criminal law could not solve all societal problems.Ipaye said review would help in proper and effective implementation of the law.He said, This is a new law and whenever we have a new law the stakeholders should come together to look at the new provision, consider the implication and project how it will be put into practice.
