Published by Punch on Fri, 25 Nov 2011

A non-governmental organization, Empretec Nigeria, an initiative of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, has advised youths on ways to becoming entrepreneurs, as business leaders and innovators of new ideas and business processes. The Country Director of Empretec, Mrs. Onari Duke, said this while speaking with Law undergraduates, during a symposium titled The Lawyer as an entrepreneur, to mark the Global Entrepreneurship Week, at the University of Lagos on Thursday.According to the country director, an individual who, rather than working as an employee, runs a small business and assumes all the risks and reward of a given business venture is one that can be referred to as an entrepreneur.Duke said, Having a right mindset is very important in all you do. Even as students, you should practice identifying opportunities and acting on them in order to develop the right behaviour. Because whether you are self employed or not, in the public sector or not, the entrepreneurial attitude will give a boost either to you as an individual or to the company you represent. She highlighted some characteristics that the students must possess to be successful in what they want to do, some of which are having a vision, ambition, originality, persistence and innovation amongst others. She said, On graduation, you could be self employed, employed in a law firm or any other organisation, but you must possess the right attitude and take direct responsibility for turning an idea into a profitable finished product through assertive risk taking and innovation.
