Avoiding Vocal Injury

SINGING is one of thoseprominentprofessions within the entertainment industry today. Nigeria has produced many reputable artistes and so many others are upcoming.Whether you are an artiste or have a hobby or intend contesting in one of this reality programmes, you would find that we all make use of our vocal cords every day.If you look a little closer, you would be able to characterise this use into one of the following for communication on a day-to-day basis, as a work tool or even both.Singing is not without its own hazards, one of which is that it affects the vocal cords and quality of your voice.Aside from voice strain and injury to the vocal cords, we all suffer considerable discomfort when we notice a change in the quality of our voice.Sound is normally produced by the vocal folds, alongside supporting muscles and cartilages (collectively called Larynx), which can suffer strain from excessive use and hitting high notes.Everyone needs to be aware of this essential part and how to protect it. If you have made use of your vocal cords at all today, then here are 12 steps to improve your vocal health.Take up to eight to 10 glasses of water each day. If your saliva is still dry, then take more, as it is important to keep the area wet. Drink more of decaffeinatedand non-alcoholic drink.Avoid forcefully clearing yourthroat, as this could bruise your vocal cords. The use of Uh-huh or grunting is not helpful.Avoidfirst-hand or second-hand cigarette smoking. First-hand cigarette smoking involves direct cigarette smoking, while a second-hand smoking doesn't involve direct cigarette smoking, but inhalation of smoke from someone else within a close range.Speak slowly; try not to squeeze in too many words out of one natural breathcycle.Enhance your voice at public speaking events with a microphone; don't try to shout.Stay away from fatty, spicy foods. Alcohol should beminimisedto two beers daily, if at all.Try as much as possible to face the person you are talking to and mouth your words.Avoid yelling and shouting, instead clap to draw attention. Use a soft voice, rather than whispering.Spend less time on the phone.Strain, pain, crackedvoice is sign of vocal cord injury. If you notice this, then try to rest your voice alongside your body.Shouldcomplaintslast longer than two weeks, then see your doctor.
