What a colourful world

Published by Nigerian Compass on Sat, 26 Nov 2011

Can you really imagine the world without something beautiful' Can you really imagine the world without anything colourful in sight'Imagine a colourless world - colourless trees, no colour in the sky, no colour on the waters...can you imagine' Well, I can't; so thank God for the colours!Colours play vital roles in human life; whether we admit it or not. An optimist is said to view the world through rose coloured spectacles (since they feel life is so sweet); when someone is sad, he said to be feeling blue. We talk of people growing green with envy or looking red with anger... You get the drift'In ancient times, colours are believed to possess magical powers. Animals communicate with subtle messages to each other by means of colours. We know that different colours signify different things as well as convey different emotions. Should we analyze' OK.Red signifies power, vitality and energy. Red also signifies lust - not love!Blue is characterized by peace and contentment. Probably that's why it is the colour of the sea and the sky.Blue also gives a feeling of security and self-esteem so it is usually the colour of banks and cars. Or haven't you noticed that most cars inadverts are blue'Purple is the colour of royalty and pride while Green is the fertile colour that is why it is the colour of the trees and lots of things that grow. It is also believed to have therapeutic effects because it is soothing.Haven't you noticed that surgeons wear green gowns'Yellow has a lot to do with modernity, achievement and the future. It also exudes confidence, insight and happiness. Look at the sun. What do you think'Pink, the feminine colour, signifies romantic love.Black, although usually characterized by death and everyevil things, actually removes obstacles and breaks bad habits. With colours taking such a prominent position in culture, how then are these meanings and purposes given to colours' It perhaps all directly correlates to our vision and ability to see and perceive colour. It is really an amazing process if you take the time to think about it. The human eyes can only perceive a very small part of the visual spectrum. We can't see ultra-violet light or infrared light but we know it is there. What would we give for meaning to these 'colours' if we could see them. Our desire to give meaning to colours comes from our need to understand our surroundings, the process or ways that we can even see are simply astounding. Colours, colours, colours! Now, wouldn't you say God has done a wonderful work of colouring the world' Suppose the trees were brown, the sky was black and the sun was red' Ah, signs of the end-time! It would have been awful.Even social events especially weddings are made glamorous or boring by the array of colours. What would you think of a wedding party dressed in brown' Wouldn't you think they are sad the wedding is taking place' Or a bride dressed in a black wedding dress' (Okay, except a certain wedding on one episode of 'Outrageous weddings' where the bride was dressed like a witch and the groom came in a coffin! Yes, Americans can be weird!!!)Even God loves colours. After a heavy thunderstorm, the sun shines and we see a rainbow in the sky. With that arch of seven beautiful colours, God reminds us of the promise never to destroy the world again by a flood, so....what colour are you
