NIA registers 281,946 cars in database

Published by Punch on Mon, 28 Nov 2011

As the Nigerian Insurers Association prepares to officially introduce its electronic insurance certificate, only 37 licensed insurance companies have so far registered 281,946 vehicles in the industrys new database. The Director- General, NIA, Mr. Sunday Thomas, disclosed this to our correspondent in an interview on Friday. He said, "Out of all the companies licensed to offer motor insurance certificate, only 281,946 vehicles have so far been registered. We are however expecting the remaining companies to update their data with us, to provide us adequate information and enable us to kick -start the electronic certificate method."According to him, when this is officially introduced, it will help to stamp out the menace of fake operators in the country, while also providing information on the details of vehicles available on Nigerian roads. He noted that many motorists were in possession of fake motor insurance certificates, either out of ignorance or due to cost consciousness. He said that it was mandatory for all motorists to have a minimum of third party motor insurance certificates, which went for only the official price of N5,000.According to him, when the electronic certificate kicks off, a person will need to present his insurance certificate as a prerequisite to obtaining a new plate number. He added that when the law enforcement agencies such as the Nigeria police and the Federal Road Safety Corps performed their inspections on the road, they would be equipped to detect if the insurance certificate possessed by the driver was genuine or fake.Thomas said, "If the insurance certificate is not in the database of NIA, the FRSC will know because they will have access to details of all the registered vehicles in the NIA database."
